A finished basement is one of the smartest ways to add living space to a Michigan home. But there's one step homeowners love to skip, and skipping it ruins more basement projects than anything else: making sure the space is dry before you finish it.

Here's the right order to do a Michigan basement. 

First, deal with water. Between spring snowmelt, heavy rain, and clay-heavy soil, our basements take on a lot of moisture. Before any framing, we check for and fix water issues — a working sump pump, sealed foundation cracks, proper drainage, sometimes a French drain. Finish over a wet basement and you'll be tearing out new drywall within a year or two.

Then insulate and control moisture. Proper insulation and a vapor barrier keep the space warm and dry through winter and stop condensation.
