The Art of Light: Integrating Natural Illumination into Your Home with Mitten Made

Michigan winters are gray. The sun sets early, the skies stay overcast, and dark rooms can start to feel gloomy by February. The good news: a remodel can pull a surprising amount of light into even a dim home. 

Here's how we do it. 

Add or enlarge windows. More glass means more daylight. In dark rooms and basements, adding a window changes everything. If you're finishing a basement bedroom, Michigan code requires an egress window anyway — and that big window doubles as a light source and a safe exit. 

Open up the floor plan. Walls block light as much as they block movement. Removing the right wall lets daylight travel from a bright room into a dark one. We always check whether a wall is load-bearing before touching it.

Use light finishes. Pale walls, reflective countertops, and lighter flooring bounce daylight around instead of soaking it up. In a north-facing room, this makes a real difference. 

Layer your lighting. When the sun does disappear at 5 p.m., good artificial light picks up the slack. A mix of ceiling lights, task lighting, and lamps on dimmers keeps a room warm and usable at night.

Consider the basement. Basements feel like caves because they're starved for light. Larger egress windows, recessed lighting, and pale finishes turn a dark basement into a space you actually want to spend time in.
