Open-concept living is still one of the most requested changes we hear about. Homeowners in older Southeast Michigan homes are tired of the closed-off kitchen and want that bright, connected feel. Opening things up is very doable — but there are a few things to know before you swing a hammer.

Is the wall load-bearing? This is the big one. Some walls hold up your house, and you can't just remove them without a plan. When a wall is load-bearing, we install a beam to carry the load safely. It's routine work for us, but it absolutely has to be done right, which is why this isn't a DIY weekend project. 

What's inside the wall? Walls often hide plumbing, wiring, and ductwork, especially in older homes. Part of our job is rerouting those cleanly so the finished space looks seamless. 

Permits. Structural work requires permits and inspections in Livingston and Oakland County towns. We handle that so your project is safe and by the book. 

Will it actually feel better? Open concept isn't right for every home. Sometimes a wide doorway or a half-wall gives you the light and flow you want while keeping some useful separation. Good design figures out the right amount of "open" for your home.
